Food safety program

Purpose

To provide for the development of the Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) Food Safety Program in all corrective services facilities.

1. Principle

Refer policy - Food and Nutrition Policy and Implementation Plan

A food safety program is a documented risk management system that identifies the food safety hazards specific to a food business, and describes the processes and systems used by the business to monitor and control these hazards and the corrective actions taken when hazards are identified.

1.1 Definitions

The term 'corrective services facility' is defined in Schedule 4 of the Corrective Services Act 2006. For the purpose of this procedure the QCS Academy is classed as a corrective services facility.

2. Governance

The Food and Nutrition Governance Committee aims to address the provision of safe and nutritious food for staff and offenders on a daily basis. The Committee's specific responsibilities are contained in the Food and Nutrition Governance Committee Handbook.

2.1 Reporting

The Chair of the Food and Nutrition Governance Committee must advise the chief executive or delegate of the Committee's proceedings and actions arising within each three month period, unless more frequently as determined by the Chair.

3. Corrective Services Facility Requirements

All corrective services facilities are required to develop a Food Safety Program. Each corrective services facility must use the template Food Safety Program - Facility - Template.

Once the program is developed the corrective services facility must submit the program to the Food and Nutrition Governance Committee to ensure compliance with the Food Act 2006. Upon approval by the committee the program should be forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner, Custodial Operations for approval.

Refer to Instrument of Delegation of Chief Executive Powers - Corrective Services Act 2006 (in-confidence), s 265

Every year each corrective services facility must review their Food Safety Program and forward the program onto the Food and Nutrition Governance Committee for endorsement. Once endorsed the program should be forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner, Custodial Operations for approval.
